Frequently Asked Questions
What are the eligibility requirements?
To be eligible to stay at the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan families must have pediatric patients receiving medical treatment in Greater Lansing. Families may stay at our House as long as their child is receiving medical treatment in the Lansing area. Generally, pediatric patients include those 21 years of age and younger.
A referral form must be provided by the child’s medical professional to our House before a family will be provided with a room. Most Sparrow Health System and McLaren Health Care facilities have our patient referral forms on hand, however, if you are seeking treatment for your child at a clinic or health care facility that does not have copies of our referral forms (or not sure if they have the forms, please contact us for a referral form or call us at 517-485-9303.
Referring physicians may call 517-485-9303 with any questions. FORMS MUST BE FILLED OUT AND RETURNED TO OUR HOUSE BY YOUR CHILD’S MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL.
How much does a stay cost?
Our families are asked to contribute a donation; however no family is ever turned away for inability to pay. With the help of our community, we are able to keep our doors open to help the families in need of our House.
How many people can stay in a room?
Due to space and safety concerns, we are only able to house close family members of the hospitalized child. One room is available per family, as we often have a waiting list for rooms. We do, however, understand that families’ support systems differ, as do their definitions of “family.” For example, we often house a mother and a grandmother of a hospitalized child, or a special aunt or uncle who is responsible for the child’s care. Most rooms sleep up to four people. If you have any questions, please call ahead at 517-485-9303.
For Your Stay
What should we bring?
Of course, you’ll want to bring clothing changes and personal toiletry items. Basic toiletries are provided and available if you forget! Otherwise, we are a true home-away-from home with pretty much everything you need. We supply towels, bedding, laundry detergent (and the free laundry facility to go with it), meals, TVs and DVD players, movies, toys, games, playroom, small library and free WiFi access throughout our House.
What will we eat?
We have a wonderful complete kitchen so please bring any favorite foods. Also, on many nights, volunteers come to our House to make our guests tasty, hot, home-cooked meals — it’s just one more way we try to make things a little easier on you. Don’t worry about running out of anything! We stock personal, and food, items for our guest’s use. Each guest room includes a cupboard in the pantry for you to store any dry groceries that you purchase. In addition, we have some refrigerator and freezer space for guest groceries.
How can I make a reservation?
Our House cannot accept advanced reservations because our rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. However, you may let us know when you will be arriving by calling 517-485-9303 so we can plan on your arrival and put you on a waiting list if necessary. When you arrive at the hospital you can call us again to see if there is a room available at that time. More often than not we will have something available.
What time can I check into the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan?
Families should check in between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. when there is a volunteer on duty to help them register and give them a tour of our House. There are a number of things for us to show you that will make your stay as easy as possible, so plan about 30 minutes for registration.
