In June 2000, the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Michigan opened its doors. Soon after, as the first year anniversary of the House approached, volunteers serving on the public relations committee wanted to commemorate the anniversary of the House in a special, family-focused way. It was then on June 23, 2001 that the first Ronald McDonald House run/walk was born. Beginning and ending at the House, participants ran and walked through the Eastside neighborhood in downtown Lansing.Remaining one of the smaller, family-focused run/walk events in the community over the next six years, early participation averaged anywhere between 50-125 people and raised nearly $20,000 over that time.It was in 2007 that organizers decided to expand the scope and reach of marketing for the event, and began drawing more participants. That same year the run/walk grew to 201 runners/walkers. That was just beginning: in 2008 almost 400 people came out for this great event, then over 700 participated in 2009, then in 2010 and 2011 the event’s course (at Hawk Island Park) was maxed out at over 800 runners/walkers. Even more people were onsite to cheer them on, bringing the total number to an estimated 1000+.
The 2016 Run for the House was another huge success with our largest turnout to date! The 2016 Run for the House welcomed over 1000 runners! The Delta Dental campus has been a great venue for our course over the past few years. The 2017 race will be held on Delta Dental’s campus in Okemos, MI. The Run for the House starts you off on the right foot as it is the first race in the race season! We look forward to another successful and fun event again this year!
